Bulb Lasagne at the Shed

Lisa Graham of Briar Patch Flowers drew an enthusiastic audience on 7th October with a hands-on demonstration of two brilliant ways to get more from your bulbs.

First up was the bulb lasagne. As the name suggests, it’s a container gardening technique where you layer different spring-flowering bulbs on top of one another in a single pot, much like the pasta sheets in a lasagne. The bigger, later-flowering bulbs go at the bottom and the smaller, earlier ones nearer the top. Each layer flowers in turn, so one pot gives you colour over a much longer stretch of spring.

Lisa then showed how to force bulbs so they flower indoors in time for Christmas. With the right timing, you can have blooms on the table in the middle of winter, brightening up the gloomiest of days.

Lisa also brought a selection to sell, and most of the audience went home with several bags of bulbs, keen to have a go themselves.
